Opening Up Communication and Teaching Responsibility

Earl Mounger is one of the teachers who is piloting Healthy Relationships for the Los Angeles County Office of Education, Juvenile Court and Community Schools Division. He teaches at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall.

June 16,1998

I highly recommend the Healthy Relationships Curriculum. My students are stimulated by the group discussions and especially the role plays. The students often get into heated debate about many of the topics. It also allows me to have better rapport with my students because we share our thoughts and ideas.

I find the curriculum easy and accessible. It requires little preparation time partly because it is so well scripted. It tells you what to say and when to say it. I'm ashamed to say it, but there were a couple of times that I didn't have the opportunity to preview the lesson before class. Because the lessons are so well thought out I was able to carry out the lesson in a convincing manner without the students detecting it.

One of the most important things about the curriculum is that it opens up communication which I feel is the most valuable tool for my students who usually settle disputes with violent acts. They pick up the language (from the curriculum) and sometimes they use it without thinking. I find that that is the proof that my students are absorbing the lessons.

The lessons teach responsibility. They put the onus on the Individual. Students learn that ultimately they are responsible for their actions. I am looking forward to starting volume two because I know that the students will be shocked at how they are manipulated by the media.

Respectfully,
